This photo is James A. Garfield National Historic Site, which is one of the sites that I am volunteering at during my year with SCA and NPS. Congress declared this a National Historic Site on December 26, 1980. James A. Garfield was the 20th president of the United States and bought the land in Mentor, Ohio in 1876. The president and his wife, Lucretia remolded the home in 1880. Sadly, on July 2, 1881 the president was assassinated in Washington D.C. Lucretia and the rest of the family looked after the home. James A. Garfield National Historic Site is one of the 407 National Parks, and strives to bring volunteerism to the site.
*James A. Garfield National Historic Site is a small park, but they are allowing people to FIND THEIR PARK in Mentor, Ohio. These banners were placed along the Historic Route 20 to kick off the Centennial of NPS. If you can find all 6 banners you know that the site is right around the corner!
*This Saturday, the 1st of August, at 2 p.m.The Great Geauga County Fair Band will perform live on President Garfield’s lawn.
