Under the watch of the iconic Old Point Loma Lighthouse, 30 yogis joined us at Cabrillo National Monument for a sunset yoga class this past weekend.
In collaboration with the Cabrillo National Monument Conservancy and local yoga studio, Yoga Six, students were given the opportunity to visit the park after hours and take in the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. Cabrillo was excited to kick-off National Parks Week with this event that allowed members of the community to connect with their park in a new way. Led by yoga instructor, Alex Warneke, students took in the stunning San Diego sunset while flowing through their sun salutations. Throughout the class, students were serenaded by the sweet strums of acoustic guitar, provided by rising talent Tavio del Rio.
At the end of the session students were allowed to walk through the park and connect in their own way to the natural resources that Cabrillo holds dear. One student later remarked, “Thanks for a divine evening, it was truly special.”
Following the Centennial Call-to-Action Initiative for “Healthy Parks, Healthy People,” events like yoga and our Annual Sunset 5k, expand the communities use of parks as a healing tool and encourage citizen recognition of the value of parks to improve overall health and well-being. Two more sunset yoga classes are scheduled for this summer, we hope all will join.
